Where Science Meets the Wisdom of Dogs (and a Dash of Spirituality)
I’m all about discovering the science that backs up the timeless spiritual truths my dog, Fenix, lives out every single day.
I’m serious—dogs are some of the wisest teachers on Earth. Fenix shows me how to embrace playfulness and live fully in the present moment, and it’s a lesson I’m endlessly grateful for.
So today, let’s explore how leaning into play and spontaneity can benefit us humans too. Let’s find out if it’s the secret to more happiness and less stress! 😉
Science Says Play Supercharges Your Brain
Play enhances your brain’s plasticity—its ability to adapt, grow, and evolve. It encourages fresh perspectives, opens doors to new possibilities, and helps you relax rather than react with fear or resistance.
And honestly, isn’t that exactly what we all need right now? With the pace of life and change speeding up, our ability to embrace flexibility and creativity is more important than ever.
It’s not just about acting silly or childlike for the sake of it. Play forces us to loosen our grip on certainty, accept the unknown, and entertain a wider range of possibilities. This builds resilience and stretches our brains in powerful ways.
Letting Go: Finding Freedom in Flow and Acceptance
When we cling tightly to how we think things should be—whether it’s life, ourselves, or others—we trap our brains in rigidity. This triggers stress and fight-or-flight responses.
Play teaches us the art of letting go. It encourages cooperation with life as it is, not as we wish it to be. Improv is another incredible tool for cultivating this mindset—it’s all about saying “yes” to the moment and flowing with whatever comes.
Hope this resonates with you!
With love and a wagging tail,
Fenix and Zoë 🤗
A Sacred Workout
Expand into Living More Playfully and Spontaneously
Use these 6 exercises to play and rewire your brain for greater spontaneity.
Do all 6 today if you can! Or as many as you can. Just 2 would be great! A few incredible! And 6 truly life-changing in just 1 day.
Remember this is for your BRAIN. And for your ability to adapt and thrive through life, and not feel stuck and in fight or flight. And keep the focus on playing and having fun!
- Play a video game. But not one you’ve played before. Play a new video game! Play with the focus of having fun, not being good at it.
- Learn 5 phrases in 5 different languages. Again, have fun, it’s not important if you do it perfectly, it’s about learning, playing and having fun.
- Make some music. I know I know. Most of you are going to say “I can’t”. But when you were 5 – you did it instantaneously. Come up with the chorus for a song, and use at least one instrument. Of course tapping on a table top counts wonderfully as a drum. But get more creative if you can!
- Go somewhere you have never been before. And take in as much new sights, sounds and experiences as you can. This can simply be walking your dog down a street you’ve never been down. But be like a child. Notice all the flowers. All the colors of the houses. Any people. Any birds or animal sounds. Take it ALL in.
- Exercise. Physical exercise done in a playful, lighthearted way is doubly great for growing your brain’s plasticity. And remember – nothing you’re good at or used to. Something new! [Google exercise workouts online, in a sport or martial art, or style that’s new for you. Maybe salsa, aikido, pilates, kung-fu, jazz – just some kind of exercise that’s not your usual thang.]
- Make art. It could be a dance. A poem. A painting. Any art at all! And yep – nothing you’re good at or used to. Try something new. [Google how to make a simple x … You’ll get some great inspirations]
