When we’re taught that our true needs and emotions are unacceptable, we start to hide them to gain approval. This makes us adaptable and well-liked, but it also keeps us from being deeply known and loved. Real connection begins when we have the courage to show up as our authentic selves.

When We Aren’t Embraced for Who We Are

As children, if we don’t receive a clear and reassuring message that our needs are valid (even the messy, inconvenient ones) and our emotions are acceptable (even the uncomfortable, overwhelming ones), we learn to suppress them.

We internalize the belief that our needs and emotions are unwelcome—maybe even unlovable.

To gain acceptance and love, we adapt by keeping those parts of ourselves hidden.
